ONS in the South West

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is responsible for collecting and publishing official statistics about the UK's society and economy. For example, the ONS undertakes the ten-yearly census of population.

ONS has a statistician and/or analyst in each of the nine English regions - you can find out more about these by clicking here.

In the South West the Regional Analyst, Eddie Smith, works closely with SWO and the intelligence network. Eddie's role is to: 

• gather intelligence to help improve the quality of ONS data and its statistical processes 

• improve the access and quality of ONS's business survey data 

• work with partners to provide independent advice, analysis, and training. 

A monthly ONS South West Newsletter contains information about the latest and forthcoming data releases and articles on specific topics. The ONS South West team (including former regional statistician, Paul Moore) has produced  summaries of key data releases such as the regional and sub-regional estimates of Gross Value Added and Gross Disposable Household Income. The latest such documents can be downloaded via the links on the right and others are available on the ONS SW Reports & Briefing Page.

On the ONS national website, Regional Trends is a comprehensive regular source of official demographic, social, industrial and economic statistics, covering aspects of life in the regions. The annual report, mainly featuring articles, is available in pdf format, accompanied by online data and Regional Profiles.

There have been various seminars and training sessions in the region and you can download some of the presentations from the Presentations page. 

The Key Data Sources page gives links to and brief descriptions of the main ways of accessing ONS data.  It also includes links to ONS compendia and to international sources.  There are separate pages linking to population and migration data sources and monthly statistical releases. The intention is to add some further source pages so please contact the regional analyst with suggestions for the types of links you would like us to include.
